Russian Missile Trackers October-November, 1963 - Sent to us
by Dale Nicol
(Will take a few minutes to load)
-
We are about 1500 miles SW of Oahu...The USS Wilhoite DER 397,
spent 6 weeks intercepting radar, radio and telemetry signals from the
Siber, Suchan and Sakhalin before we were relieved by the USS Newell
DER-322
-
Russian smoke screen to prevent us from seeing what they were
doing.
-
Russian helo called a "Hen" is seen on aft deck
-
President Kennedy was killed just before the Newell relieved
us..ten minutes after we knew Kennedy was killed, the Sakhalin sent us
the flashing light message, "sorry of your great loss"
-
Early morning rendezvous with the Newell about 25 miles away from
the Russians. You can see the mast head, range and port light as
she closes in for our dawn rendezvous
-
Hi-lined 5 guys and gear to the Newell...these were three Navy
CT's and two Marines to guard top secret stuff
-
Back to Pearl Harbor and greeted by my wife Judy and 4 month old
daughter, Shelley at the Bravo pier. I do not recall the names of
the two other wives on the pier.
